PENNSYLVANIA, October 15, 2001 - Foamex International Inc. (NASDAQ: FMXI),
the leading manufacturer of flexible polyurethane and advanced polymer foam
products, announced that John C. Culver, 69, former U.S. Senator from Iowa,
has been elected to the company's Board of Directors, effective immediately.
In making the announcement, Marshall S. Cogan, Chairman of the Foamex Board,
said, "As the industry leader in new product innovation, Foamex is becoming
increasingly technology-driven. Senator Culver will provide critical input
to our board as we leverage this expertise globally and increase our
participation in the defense and aerospace sectors."
Since 1981, Senator Culver has been a senior partner at Arent Fox law firm
in Washington D.C., where he served on the firm's Executive Committee and
headed the Government Relations practice.
For ten years beginning in 1965, he represented Iowa in the United States
House of Representatives, where he served on the Foreign Affairs Committee
and chaired the Subcommittee on Foreign Economic Policy. In 1974, he was
elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served on the Armed Services Committee
and chaired the Subcommittee on Research and Development. He was the subject
of a book by Elizabeth Drew entitled Senator, about the role and
responsibilities of a U.S. Senator.
Senator Culver is a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Law School.
He attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, as the Lionel de Jersey
Harvard Scholar. He also served for three years as an infantry officer in
the United States Marine Corps.
A member of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and a
Director of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, Senator Culver has
also served on the Board of Overseers of Harvard University. He has served
on the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations, and is
currently chair of the Senior Advisory Committee of the Institute of
Politics of the John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Senator Culver is the recipient of six honorary degrees and dozens of
national awards, and is the co-author with John Hyde of American Dreamer,
The Life and Times of Henry A. Wallace.
