LINWOOD, PENNSYLVANIA, September 6, 2000 - Foamex
International Inc. (Nasdaq: FMXI), North America’s largest manufacturer
of flexible polyurethane and advanced polymer foam products, today
announced that it has installed a new, advanced reticulation line at its
Eddystone, Pennsylvania facility. The new line brings to five the number
of thermal reticulation lines operated globally by Foamex, and expands
the company’s thermal reticulation manufacturing capacity by nearly
thirty percent.
Thermal reticulation is a post-manufacturing process
invented by Foamex that completely removes the membrane from between
foam cell strands, maximizing uniformity of the cell structure. Foamex
reticulated foam is currently used in a wide range of products for
filtering, support structure and fluid delivery applications, including
blood oxygenators, ceramic foundry filters and hi-tech battery and
computer/printer components.
Stephen Drap, Executive Vice President of Foamex’s
Technical Products Group, noted, "Today’s advanced, specialty
applications require high-quality foam with both consistent cell size
and uniform cell structure. Foamex is the leader in producing consistent
cell size through our advanced foam manufacturing process. Combining
that expertise with our proprietary thermal reticulation capability
enables us to deliver the controlled, predictable permeability that
customers demand.
"Thermal reticulation is a proprietary process for
Foamex, and our new line embodies the latest advances in productivity,
quality, safety and automation," said John Televantos, Chief Operating
Officer and President of the company’s Foam Products Group.
"Applications for reticulated products have grown enormously over the
past decade," Televantos continued, "and this investment reaffirms our
commitment to providing the capital and human resources required to meet
consistently growing customer demand for both new and existing
reticulated polyurethane foam products."
Foamex’s Technical Products business, which recorded
sales of $92 million in 1999, operates thermal reticulation units in
Eddystone, Pennsylvania and Fort Wayne, Indiana, with additional
manufacturing facilities in Arcade, New York, San Leandro, California
and Cornelius, North Carolina.
Foamex, headquartered in Linwood, Pennsylvania, is the
world’s leading producer of comfort cushioning for bedding, furniture,
carpet cushion and automotive markets. The company also manufactures
high-performance polymers for diverse applications in the industrial,
aerospace, electronics and computer industries as well as filtration and
acoustical applications for the home. Revenues for 1999 were $1.3
billion.
