If you've ever sampled or tested a Reflex® cushioning product, you've probably observed that while Reflex® looks like other foam products, it performs at a consistently higher level than comparable conventional polyurethane. With Reflex® cushioning, there is more buoyancy and spring-like feel without the sinking sensation associated with conventional flexible foams. The secret is the patented Variable Pressure Foaming (VPFSM) process. We call it Chamber TechnologySM.

Chamber TechnologySM is the most innovative development in flexible polyurethane foam in decades. Instead of producing foam at ambient pressure, this environmentally friendly process uses a series of sealed chambers to manufacture foam. The result: Reflex® furniture cushioning with high-performance properties never before possible.
Flexible polyurethane foam is produced by mixing a resin with an activator. The resulting reaction generates gas bubbles that quickly expand to create foam.
Most flexible foam is produced in an open trough where atmospheric pressure, humidity and temperature changes can affect bubble formation. Changing conditions can cause variations in the finished foam product. To improve consistency, Foamex experimented with controlling the pressure inside a fully enclosed production line. The results were astounding. Using a series of sealed, pressure-controlled chambers (fig. 7), Foamex was able to dramatically improve flexible foam properties and performance capabilities, creating a new standard of high-performance. This variable pressure foaming (VPFSM) innovation was patented and called Chamber TechnologySM and the resulting products are distinctively labeled as Reflex® furniture cushioning.
FAQ Which Reflex® benefits come from Chamber TechnologySM?
- Extended durability. All Reflex® cushioning products have extended performance life. Unique chemistry combined with pressure-controlled Chamber TechnologySM production result in stronger cell bonding, so that the comfort you feel on the showroom floor lasts longer in actual use than conventionally produced products.
- Luxurious comfort. Reflex® products combine the luxurious feel of spring-formed cushions with exclusive straight-line support. This is a big advantage over other foam cushioning products that have "knee curve" - that sinking feeling before support takes place. Finer cell structure and the ability to "dial in" desired support features mean that Reflex® products are cradling on the surface, yet very supportive underneath.
- Greater styling flexibility. Stronger cell bonds mean Reflex® cushioning can be very soft, yet can still be handled, cut, and shaped to meet any styling need. In fact, Reflex Wrap® and Reflex FilSM products are widely used to replace fiberfill and fiber batting. The look is the same. The feel is the same. But Reflex Wrap® and Reflex FilSM far outlast fiber products.
- Remarkable consistency. Chamber TechnologySM allows us to "dial in" desired properties and to create Reflex® furniture cushioning with excellent consistency, addressing problems with mismatched cushions.
- Friendly to environment. The exclusive Chamber TechnologySM process does not use CFCs or any potentially harmful blowing agents, enabling Foamex to exceed Clean Air Act requirements.
- Meets industry standards. All Reflex® cushioning products comply with UFAC and Calif. Technical Bulletin 117 (CAL TB117) flammability requirements.
